“This form of racism is socially acceptable in my area of residence so it’s not a problem”
“I want to describe my blog however I want even if it’s racist because my blog is more important to me than the treatment of a group of human beings”
“I’m unable to grasp the basic message of what you just said; go away

This is actually a real problem.
In the UK many Irish (and Scottish) Travellers call themselves “Gypsies” and they are quite proud of the word (the slur they are usually called is “Pikey” and they hate that word). However, Irish Travellers (and many Scottish Travellers) are racially white and do not have the same history with the word Gypsy that the Roma (Sinte, Kaale/Kale etc) do. For example, Irish Travellers were not killed during the Holocaust. They did not have “Z” tattooed on them (for Zigeuner, the German translation of Gypsy). Although they do suffer discrimination because of their ethnicity, they do not face the outright racism that the usually darker-skinned Roma do.
I grew up calling myself a Gypsy. We called ourselves what outsiders called us. We didn’t use the word Roma because it was a word in our language. I never heard of the World Romani Congress …. not until fairly recently.
Anyway, many of us do call ourselves “Gypsies” - however, it is our right to, as part of the ethnic or racial group underneath the pejorative exonym. It is NOT (and never will be) OK for anyone OUTSIDE of these ethnic/racial groups to take the word and appropriate it and use it as their own. I don’t care whether you live in an area where lots of “Gypsies” live - not all of us like or use the word, so please quit with your “if you don’t like it go away” bullshit. That’s extremely disrespectful and erases all of us who have suffered under the word.
Irish (and Scottish) Travellers are NOT the same as Roma (and other EU groups such as Sinte) who have roots in India. There are over 15 ethnic and racial groups thrown under the word Gypsy - a word that is still used today to forcibly sterilize, marginalize, and victimize Roma all over the world.
So please, take your racism and your white privilege and go somewhere else. Far away from the internet. You don’t have a clue what you’re talking about and your white bullshit holier than thou I can do what I want is sickening.
